Figuring Out How to Accomplish Many Random Outdoor Projects
Figuring out how to accomplish many random outdoor projects helped us to be creative with the aesthetic look of our little pine cottage.
You’ve heard it before~ that we’re new at this and really just learning as we go along with these mostly DIY projects. Since Nate also suffers from a bit of perfectionism {wink wink}, we had to make sure that every little detail was just right. Or at least, the best that we could spruce up our little old gem!
OUTDOOR OUTLETS AND VENTS
Nate was working on the outside of our laundry room area. He was cutting out holes for the vents for the laundry. And also cutting out holes for the outlets on the outside of the house on the siding. He was coming up with creative ways to place those outlets.
Instead of having them bulge out from the siding, he was working on inverting them so they wouldn’t stick out as much and be flush with the siding. This made it look so much better and aesthetically more pleasing to the eye.
You know, I’m so glad that he thinks of these little details because sometimes I just wouldn’t even notice those kinds of things. I don’t usually have the kind of detail for things like he does. Functionality is more of what is at the top of my one track mind. Everything seems to be a canvas to him, like an art project. I’m really glad that he has that ability to see things that way!
OUTDOOR SALVAGED WOOD ADVENTURES
One of our neighbors had offered some old salvaged wood to us from her house, which is also in our historic district. So Nate headed over there to scope it out and pick out some of those pieces of salvaged wood. Little did he know that he would be surprised by what he saw! I think they all were surprised including our neighbor and her son.
There was a possum living among the salvaged wood! According to our neighbor, he seemed to be a backyard cottage dweller! There was certainly an animal that was living in the barn/shed where the wood was being stored. Awe, he actually looked so cute with his bright white face, especially with that little wink he gave! No one wanted to disturb this little fellow, but the mission was still to get what we came for – old original salvaged wood from our neighbors historic house to reuse in our own little historic cottage.
Oh, and as if the little guy couldn’t be any cuter, he lets out a relaxed yawn while they were squirming around trying to figure out how to get him out or maneuver around him! I tell ya, there is never a dull moment around here in our neighborhood. There is all this nature in the midst of the city and our urban area. We have a fox that lives in our backyard in our other neighbor’s shed. We’ve seen other possums, raccoons, an armadillo, and I’m sure some other critters around here.
It was kinda cool because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a possum this close though with a white face like that. It just looked like a stuffed animal toy or something like that!
Figuring out how to accomplish many random outdoor projects came with an interesting surprise that we absolutely were not expecting!
MORE MUDDING, SANDING, AND PRIMING
Nate was finishing up the mudding and sanding in the bathroom. And like many of our projects, it was taking a bit longer than we had anticipated. He was working so hard and it was a really big job.
I was surprised when he was priming because I couldn’t believe that we would actually have a real wall in the bathroom finally! Nate was wondering if we would later decide to put beadboard up on our bathroom walls. If so, then he really shouldn’t have done all the work he did to mud, sand, and prime the drywall!
Hopefully we don’t end up putting beadboard on the walls because then it would be like he did all that for nothing. We still are currently living with the same drywall in the bathroom now because we have not figured out what we want to do with it yet. That is on the to-do list along with a lot of other projects.
But as always, the good thing is that we’re getting the practice in and learning new skills. Well, at least he’s learning them and practicing. And I’m learning from him the skills that he’s learning! {triple wink}
PRIMING METAL THINGS OUTDOORS
Remember earlier how I talked about the detailed eye that Nate has? Well, there he goes again! This time with all the metal that was around the siding. And of course, he wanted everything to blend in with the house and not stick out.
So, we have a metal pipe cover that goes around the pipes for the AC unit that is housed outside and runs up through to the attic. Then we also have the outlets, electrical boxes, and laundry vent that were all metal too.
He used a metal primer to cover up the metal so that it would blend in with the rest of the white primer on the siding of the cottage. It looked so much better after he did that! And especially after he added a second coat of it.
Figuring out how to accomplish many random outdoor projects helped us to make more progress on our little pine cottage!
